Leadership Center at UTD To Hold Seminar Event Is New Center’s Inaugural Offering RICHARDSON, Texas (Feb. 11, 2004) — “Strategic Leadership: Translating Vision into Action,” the inaugural offering of The University of Texas at Dallas School of Management’s Leadership Center at UTD, will be held Feb. 18 to 21 at the American Airlines Training and Conference Center in Fort Worth. The seminar is the first in a series of three executives-in-residence programs this semester that will focus on ways executives can infuse moral decision making and values into the corporate environment. “Change in Turbulent Times: Developing Personal Strategies for Improvement” will be held March 3-6, and “Accountable Leadership: Infusing Moral Decision Making” is scheduled for early May. The executives-in-residence series is part of the two-pronged approach of the Leadership Center at UTD, which is directed by Gerald H. Hoag, who founded the center last spring. Hoag has 35 years of management consulting experience, including more than 30 years as a partner working with senior management. In addition to the seminar series, the center is organizing the Excellence in Leadership Series Speakers Program designed to bring to the Dallas area leading international voices on the issues of effectiveness and ethics in leadership. Hoag said the UTD School of Management’s strong research element is critical to the center’s mission. “I think we need to harness the huge body of knowledge that exists in leadership and apply it in a systematic and effective manner for students and people within both non-profit and for-profit organizations who are in leadership roles so it can be useful to them,” he said. “As an academic institution, you never do anything that isn’t based on research. What you learn from research — whether it involves CEO compensation or executive ethics — is important as you go forward and bring it into teaching.” UTD School of Management Dean Dr. Hasan Pirkul noted that his school was building its faculty in the area of management strategy and that the Leadership Center’s activities were part of that initiative. “We have on our faculty one of the leading management strategy academics in the nation, Dr. Gregory Dess, who holds UTD’s Andrew R. Cecil Endowed Chair in Applied Ethics. Combining the knowledge of such a leading academic with the wisdom of a skilled practitioner like Mr. Hoag is part of what is making the center a success,” Pirkul said. The activities of the center have drawn corporate support, with Ericsson, Inc., A.T. Kearney, Inc., Nokia, Nortel Networks, The Eugene McDermott Foundation and 7-Eleven, Inc., serving as sponsors and advisors. All three of this spring’s executive-in-residence seminar programs are being held at the American Airlines Training and Conference Center. Executives from the center’s sponsoring companies may attend the seminars at no additional cost. The cost for individuals is $4,500 per three-day residential seminar.
