Actuaries are a special breed of mathematicians-statisticians-economists-financiers who apply their quantitative skills to problems involving insurance. What makes theirs one of the best jobs in the country according to the “Jobs Rated Almanac”?

Jerry Tuttle, a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and author of a humorous short story on the subject, will explain during a free seminar for students, staff and the public at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, in The University of Texas at Dallas Conference Center, Room 1.304.

Tuttle, a senior vice-president of Platinum Underwriters Reinsurance of New York, has been an actuary for 30 years. His humorous short story, “1 + 1 = 0,” recounts how two actuaries create a fictional Fellow, who is ultimately elected president of the actuarial society. The story can be found online at http://users.aol.com/fcas/oneplusone.html.

The seminar is sponsored by The School of Natural Science and Mathematics, the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the UT Dallas Actuarial Consulting Center. For additional information, contact Dr. Sam Efromovich at 972-883-6457 or efrom@utdallas.edu.
