UT Dallas Vice President for Research Dr. Bruce Gnade presented a certificate and prize money to Tomoyasu Mani, winner of the first annual Undergraduate Research Poster Competition, for the work Mani did in Dr. A. Dean Sherry’s chemistry laboratory.
The poster, “Modulation of Water Exchange in Ln(III) DOTA-tetaamide Complexes” was one of 19 entered in the April 16 competition.
Mani said the $300 he received for winning the contest would be spent during his upcoming two-week trip to Hong Kong. He is from Matsuyama City in the Ehime Prefecture of Japan and is in his senior year at UT Dallas, working toward a biochemistry degree.
Scott Nietfeld won second place and $200 for his work “Cost-Efficient Methods for the Real-Time Tracking of a Rocket in Flight.” Nietfeld, from Burnet, Texas, is a sophomore double majoring in cognitive science and computer science.
Hector Osuna, Jr. won third place and $100 for his poster “Release of Bioregulartory Agent Nitric Oxide from Electrospun Nanofibers.” Osuna is from Guamuchil, Sinaloa in Mexico. He is a junior chemistry major.
Mani was one of 20 students presenting results from a proposal that earned him an Undergraduate Research Scholar Award, which is a separate, semester-long research stipend. For that competition, students received $500 and their faculty sponsor received $300 to cover such costs as laboratory equipment, travel or other project-related expenses.
Gnade plans to make annual events out of both the research grant competition and the poster contest as a way to showcase the research being done by UT Dallas undergraduate students.
