RICHARDSON, Texas (June 21, 2004) — The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) Career Center, which offers professional development programs for UTD students and alumni from all academic disciplines, has joined a nationwide initiative to encourage college graduates to learn about federal jobs and pursue opportunities with the U. S. government.

As a founding member of Call to Serve: Leaders in Education Allied for Public Service, the center will undertake a series of educational and outreach programs to help students land internships and jobs with federal agencies across the country.

As part of the program, UTD will sponsor campus events to help educate students about federal careers — including seminars about what kinds of jobs are available and how apply for them — and highlight alumni who are making important contributions in federal service.

There is a need for additional federal workers. And according to projections, government hiring needs are expected to increase substantially in the coming years as more federal workers retire and as the country responds to increasing national security needs. During the next five years, more than half of all federal workers could become eligible to retire, including more than 70 percent of senior managers.

“We are pleased to be a partner in this program and to help educate and motivate students to consider service to our country as a potential career path,” said Sue Sherbet, director of the UTD Career Center. “And we are enthusiastic about the possibility that the partnership will enhance relationships with the various agencies in which our students already are contributing as interns.”

Call to Serve will be supported by the nonprofit Partnership for Public Service, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to recruiting and retaining excellence in the federal civil service, and by the U. S. Office of Personnel Management, the government’s human resources agency. For more information, please visit www.ourpublicservice.org.
