The 2024 Eugene McDermott Scholars

The Eugene McDermott Scholars Program at The University of Texas at Dallas welcomed 16 students as its 2024 class this fall.

The McDermott program provides students with UT Dallas’ rigorous education, along with a four-year slate of intensive extracurricular activities. McDermott Scholars have access to leadership training, service engagement, cultural enrichment and opportunities designed to help them develop the skills, experience and confidence to be successful in society’s many dimensions.

Beyond academics, the scholars use their time and talents to help grow UT Dallas. They give back to the campus and wider Dallas communities through service with nonprofit partners and allies across many areas of need. On campus, they work to maintain, expand or found campus organizations to enhance student life.

“We are excited to welcome this cohort of scholars. They are outstanding students and engaged leaders who are primed to pursue further growth during their time at UTD,” said Reena Schellenberg, Hobson Wildenthal Chair and director of the McDermott Student Programs. “We are invested in supporting them, and we look forward to seeing them continue to learn, lead and serve, carrying on the McDermott legacy of positive impact.”

This year’s cohort features 12 students from Texas, one from Colorado, one from Maryland, one from Oregon and one from India. The students joined 37 other scholars currently at UT Dallas and the more than 365 scholars who preceded them.

The program was made possible by a $32 million gift from Margaret McDermott, wife of Eugene McDermott, one of the co-founders of Texas Instruments (TI). Eugene McDermott and two TI co-founders, Cecil Green and J. Erik Jonsson, founded the research institution that joined the UT System in 1969.
