Award Honors Veteran Volleyball Player

Krissy Seaman, the first four-year member of UT Dallas’ volleyball team, is the winner of this year’s American Southwest Conference Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Award.

Seaman, a graduating senior from Mansfield, Texas, was selected for the honor in a vote by athletic directors from the ASC’s 15 member institutions.

The Jacoby Award, named for the ASC’s first commissioner, honors one male and one female student-athlete every year who best display the attributes of sportsmanship, leadership, citizenship and academic integrity. She won along with Ty Palmer, a football player at Texas Lutheran University.

To become a nominee on the conference-wide ballot, students must win the ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year award in their respective sports. Seaman was named the 2008 ASC Volleyball Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year in the fall.

“Krissy has proven to be the ideal student-athlete,” UT Dallas head volleyball coach Marci Sanders said in her nomination. “She has served as our team captain and is known as the ‘team mom.’ ”

Seaman came to UT Dallas as a freshman in 2005 and won second-team All-ASC East Division honors in her first season. She won UT Dallas’ Comet Award each of the last four seasons for her positive attitude, and was a key factor in the Comets’ first conference-winning season in 2008.

A member of the UT Dallas honors program, Seaman was named ASC Academic All-Conference three times and was twice recognized as a UT Dallas Distinguished Scholar-Athlete. Seaman was also active on campus, serving as the volleyball team’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representative and as a UT Dallas Student Ambassador.

Seaman earned her degree and teaching certification in four years, and has been hired to teach math at Richardson High School in the Richardson Independent School District beginning in Fall 2009.
