As part of its celebration of “Earth Science Week,” the Geosciences Department of The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) will host a lecture titled “ Mt. St. Helens: A Restless Volcano Awakens” by UTD research volcanologist Dr. Steven C. Bergman at noon on Monday, Oct. 11.
The lecture, which will be free and open to the public, will be held in the Kusch Auditorium, Room 2.102 in the Founders North Building on the UTD campus in Richardson. The event aims to review the history of the Cascade Range’s most active and famous volcano for the “non-scientific” public, and will offer an explanation of the daily eruptions of ash and steam that commenced on Oct. 1 and have grabbed the attention of the news media.

Bergman, who earned a Ph.D. degree from Princeton University in 1982, is a senior lecturer at UTD and teaches such courses as Earthquakes and Volcanoes, Diamonds and Physical Geology. In recent days, he has been interviewed about Mt. St. Helens by members of the print, radio and television news media.
Each year since 1998, the American Geological Institute has sponsored Earth Science Week to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the earth sciences and to encourage stewardship of the Earth. The theme of this year’s event, to be held Oct. 10-16, is, appropriately, “Living on a Restless Earth,” focusing on natural disasters.
