The UT Dallas Callier Center for Communication Disorders has received more than $407,000 from the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas to fund three priority needs programs for 2009-2010. The amount represents a 42 percent increase over the previous year’s support.

The center received more than $270,000 through a competitive grant process, and the remaining $137,000 came from the United Way’s partnership funds.

The partnership funds are unrestricted dollars that may be used to support program or administrative expenses, but the Callier Center uses the funds solely for direct patient care.
 
“We are always grateful for outside financial support, and this year’s increase in funding from the United Way will be used to benefit so many lives,” said Donise Pearson, director of clinical operations.  “Receiving the news of the funding increase was very exciting and really rewarding for those who have worked so hard to make this happen.”

The three funded programs include:

  • Pediatric Hearing Aid Services: Opening the Door to Success – This program is for children from birth through 18 years of age who need initial hearing evaluations and hearing aid fittings. The program provides treatment and follow-up services designed to improve a child’s hearing.
  • Cochlear Implants: Opening the Door to Success – This program is for children ages nine months to five years who need cochlear implant evaluations and follow-up visits after surgical implantation. The program also provides parents with the information they need to decide if cochlear implants are the best option for their child.
  • Treating Children with Unintelligible Speech: Increasing Chances of School Success – This program is for children ages 2½ to 6 with moderate to severe articulation disorders. The program provides intensive therapy for the children and educational information for parents so they have the tools they need to communicate more effectively.

“The partnership between the United Way and the Callier Center has benefited the North Texas community since 1968,” said Pearson. “We are very grateful for the continued support and look forward to partnering with the United Way for years to come.”
