Student Oxfam Group to Hold ‘Hunger Banquet’

Oxfam America, a registered student organization at UT Dallas, will host its first “Hunger Banquet” on Monday, Nov. 17.

The Hunger Banquet is designed to simulate patterns of food distribution around the world and to educate participants about hunger and poverty in the U.S. and abroad. Student Government is co-sponsoring the event.

The event is 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Galaxy Rooms.

Oxfam America’s Hunger Banquets are designed to let participants experience how their decisions affect others in the world.

Guests draw tickets at random that assign them to high-, middle-, or low-income tiers and receive a corresponding meal.

The 15 percent in the high-income tier are served a sumptuous meal. The 35 percent in the middle-income section eat a simple meal of rice and beans. The 50 percent in the low-income tier help themselves to small portions of rice and water.

Guests are invited to share their thoughts after the meal.

Oxfam America was founded in 1970 with a mission to to alleviate hunger and poverty worldwide.
