Alumni, students and North Texas neighbors made a difference for individuals and programs at The University of Texas at Dallas during North Texas Giving Day on Sept. 19.
Participants in the annual online day of giving made 351 gifts to support the Callier Center for Communication Disorders, the Center for BrainHealth and other UT Dallas programs, with overall contributions to the University totaling more than $200,000.
Some 200 gifts were directed to the Callier Center, which will benefit from more than $125,000 raised for programs that provide audiology services and speech-language therapy to children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Gifts to the Callier Center included $70,000 in matching gift funds provided by individuals and foundations.
On campus, the Delta Zeta sorority helped raise funds for the Shreena Bhakta Camper Scholarship, in memory of their late sister. The scholarship allows children with cochlear implants to attend a summer camp staffed by Callier Center audiologists, speech-language pathologists and graduate students.
The Center for BrainHealth collected nearly $25,000 to support research into brain functionality, leading to the development of treatments that enhance mental performance for children and adults.
Across the Metroplex, North Texas Giving Day donors contributed more than $50 million to nearly 3,000 nonprofit organizations. Organized by Communities Foundation of Texas, the regional effort is the largest community giving event in the U.S.
