Series Will Focus on Child Development Issues

The new UT Dallas Center for Children and Families, in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, will host its first lecture series this spring. Parents and child development practitioners are invited to attend.

The series, titled “Helping Children Succeed,” will include presentations about topics such as bullying, healthy eating, chronic illness and encouraging critical thinking.

The 2009 speakers are all faculty members from the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, which has one of the largest concentrations of child development experts in the state.

“Parents deserve to have the latest child development research,” said Dr. Deborah Wiebe, who organized the series. “The new Center for Children and Families is creating a forum to share this information.”

The speakers, their topics and the schedule for the 2009 series are as follows:

• “Social Aggression Among Children: What Parents and Educators Can Do to Reduce Bullying” — Dr. Marion K. Underwood; Wednesday, Feb. 11.
• “Childhood Obesity: How Parents Can Help Children Develop Healthy Eating Practices” — Dr. Shayla C. Holub; Wednesday, Feb. 25.
• “Helping Children and Families Cope with Chronic Illness” — Dr. Deborah Wiebe; Wednesday, March 25.  
• “Encouraging Children to Think Critically in an Age of Misinformation” — Dr. Candice M. Mills; Wednesday, April 29.

All lectures will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. in the UT Dallas Conference Center, room CN 1.102, with refreshments to follow. The events are free and open to the public. For more information visit the Center for Children and Families Web site.
