U. T. Dallas’ Dr. Larry D. Terry To Address Global Forum on Reinventing Government

RICHARDSON, Texas (April 13, 2005) — Dr. Larry D. Terry, executive vice provost for academic affairs at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) and an international authority in the field of public administration, will address the 6th Global Forum on Reinventing Government in Seoul next month and serve as moderator of a discussion that will feature as two of the participants Yoon-woo Lee, the vice chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics, a company with significant business operations in North Texas, and former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke.

More than 5,000 people are expected to attend the four-day event, which is held in a different country each year in cooperation with the United Nations and is believed to be the world’s largest conference on government reinvention. It will run from May 24 to May 27.

The theme of the 2005 conference is “Toward Participatory and Transparent Governance.”

On the second day of the conference, Terry will preside over a discussion titled the “Korea Session,” which will feature speeches by Lee, Hawke and other notables and a forum that examines the effectiveness of South Korea’s attempts at reinvention and evaluates the country’s future courses. One of the panelists will be Xu Bao Kang, chief director of China’s People’s Daily newspaper.

On the forum’s final day, in what the organizers are billing as a “Wrap-up Session,” Terry will address the conference attendees on the discussions that occurred during the “Korea Session” and pass along any recommendations or conclusions that may have resulted.

As executive vice provost for academic affairs at UTD, Terry, who joined the university in 2001, is responsible for faculty affairs, staff appointments and oversight of endowments. Terry also supervises UTD’s Center for U.S./Mexico Studies, the Office of International Education and the university’s Web services, and serves as editor of the prestigious and award-winning scholarly journal Public Administration Review (PAR), which is housed at UTD.

Terry also is a member of the United States General Accounting Office’s (GAO) Educator’s Advisory Panel and last month was named to the advisory board of the International Public Management Training Center at the City University of Hong Kong. The center was established earlier this year to provide high-quality training to officials in Mainland China.

As a member of the GAO panel, Terry helps to identify current and emerging issues in higher education and alert the agency about the changing interests and needs of students, relative to employment with the federal government. The group also monitors trends related to the recruitment, hiring, development and retention of a diverse, talented and results-oriented work force.
