Dr. Emily Tobey, an associate provost and the Nelle C. Johnston Chair in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, has been selected to join an elite network of more than 2,500 women as a member of the Leadership Texas Class of 2009.

She is one of the outstanding women leaders competitively selected from across the state to participate in Leadership Texas, which is the longest-running women’s leadership development program in the U.S.

Leadership Texas was launched in 1983 to help women become better and more informed leaders in the state’s communities, organizations and corporations.

Throughout the yearlong program, Tobey will have the opportunity to broaden her perspective of the state by exploring five Texas cities and receiving cutting-edge information from renowned experts, government officials and other leaders to positively impact her work at UT Dallas and the Callier Center for Communication Disorders, where she conducts research regarding technology for people with hearing impairments.

“Texas, in many ways, reflects and leads our country economically and culturally,” said Tobey. “Information gathered from this program will help prepare me to guide our University and its components, like the Callier Center, to accept the challenges of the future and the changing faces of our future students.”

The theme for the 2009 program is “The Changing Face of Texas.” Events kicked-off in Austin on March 23-25, and future meetings will focus on three common themes: the economy, education and the environment.

The group will travel to Galveston, a hurricane-stricken area; Texarkana, a city straddling politics and the cultures of two states; El Paso, one of the safest cities in the nation yet only a river away from Juarez, Mexico, one of the deadliest and smoggiest cities; and Fort Worth, the Western showcase of the Metroplex.
