RICHARDSON, Texas (Aug. 14, 2003) — For the third consecutive year, Public Administration Review (PAR),
a scholarly journal edited by Dr. Larry D. Terry, associate provost at The University of Texas at
Dallas (UTD), has been ranked the most frequently cited academic publication in the field of public
administration.
PAR‘s total of 922 citations was more than
those of the second-ranked journal, Philosophy and Public Affairs, published by Princeton
University Press (452 citations), and the third-ranked journal, Public Administration, published
in the United Kingdom by Oxford University Press (438 citations), combined.
The rating was issued by Journal Citation Reports
(JCR), which is put out by the independent database publishing company Institute for Scientific
Information (ISI). ISI evaluates more than 9,000 publications in a variety of disciplines each
year and is regarded as one of the most authoritative sources for assessing the quality of academic
journals.
A leading public affairs expert and a professor of
public administration in UTD’s School of Social Sciences, Terry has served as editor-in-chief of
the journal since 1999.
PAR, the official journal of the American
Society for Public Administration, is the oldest scholarly journal of public administration in the
United States and is published six times per year. Terry said that in the coming year the journal
will address such diverse topics as environmental justice, public radio and academic research and
will explore the intense national and international media attention paid to high-profile criminals,
including Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh. The article on McVeigh will discuss how the Federal
Bureau of Prisons handled the media interest and still maintained the safety and security of the
maximum-security penitentiary where the execution was held.
Earlier this year, PAR was named the leading
public administration journal in a separate survey by political scientists. That survey was included
in the publication PS: Political Science & Politics, the journal of the American Political
Science Association.
