Services have been scheduled for Monday for Dr. Frank Raymond Allum, a longtime faculty member in the UT Dallas Department of Mathematical Sciences. Dr. Allum died July 3 at age 75.
Described as an outstanding colleague and professor, Allum taught hundreds of students throughout his lengthy career at UT Dallas and contributed significantly to the department.
“His area of focus was teaching our calculus classes,” said Dr. Larry Ammann, professor in the math department. “Later on, he took on some administrative duties in addition to his teaching schedule. He was a very dear member of our faculty and beloved by students.”
Allum, was born in Sydney, Australia. He studied at the University of Melbourne where he received bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in physics. After his training, he worked as a research associate at the space science department at Rice University.
In the late 1960s, Allum began his decades-long employment at UT Dallas in what was then known as the Division of Atmospheric and Space Sciences.
According to Dr. Krawcewicz, the Head of Mathematical Sciences, “Dr. Allum’s support, experience and common sense attitude proved to be of great value to the department. He was a trusted friend that will be missed by all.”
His career progressed throughout the years and he retired earlier this year as senior lecturer in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. He was an active member of All Saints Catholic Church in Dallas, where he served as an usher and eucharistic minister.
“He was a mainstay of the core mathematics curriculum, giving generations of young scientists and engineers the fundamentals they would need throughout their careers,” said Dr. Myron Salamon, Dean of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
He is survived by three nieces and a nephew. Allum was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Belle Jordan Allum.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 18, at All Saints Catholic Church, located at 5231 Meadowcreek Drive. In lieu of flowers, the family is setting up a scholarship fund at UT Dallas in his honor.
