Library Staffer is Awarded Fellowship

Mary Jo Venetis, associate director for technical services at McDermott Library, has been selected by the International Library & Information Studies Honor Society (Beta Phi Mu), to receive the Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship.

Six of these fellowships are awarded each year to library and information science doctoral students who are working on their dissertations. The fellowship carries a cash prize of $3,000.

Venetis will be recognized at the Beta Phi Mu 60th Anniversary G-ALA at Anaheim, Calif., on June 28 during the annual American Library Association Conference.

Ms. Venetis joined McDermott Library in 2006 and became responsible for all of the library’s cataloging and acquisitions functions. Her dissertation is titled, “Identification of Remote Leadership Patterns in the Library and Information Science Field.” She previously received an Amigos Fellowship Program award of $1,440 for her dissertation work.

Beta Phi Mu was founded at the University of Illinois in 1948. In 1997, the honor society became affiliated with the American Library Association. It is based at Florida State University in Tallahassee.

McDermott Library has a considerable number of staff members who have earned doctoral degrees — Dean Larry D. Sall, Senior Assoicate Director Ellen Safley, Callier Center Librarian Allen Clayton, Data Librarian Walter Johnson, Media and Archives Cataloger Misu Kim, and Manager of Library Systems Faizur Rahman.
