Callier Director's Accomplishments Celebrated

The Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders & Sciences (ANCDS) honored Dr. Thomas Campbell, executive director of the UT Dallas Callier Center for Communication Disorders, at its 2008 annual meeting recently.

Campbell was recognized for his long history of accomplishments and extensive research in the field of neurologic communication disorders in children. ANCDS Honors Committee members called Campbell a “humble teacher and a terrific role model.”

Held in Chicago, the meeting brought together professional, clinical, educational and scientific academy members who focus on neurologic communication disorder research and quality-of-life issues for affected adults and children.

In conferring the Academy’s highest honor, Campbell’s colleagues cited his blend of clinical and professional service, his scholarship, administrative skills and his professional camaraderie.

Campbell, a professor in the UT Dallas School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences (BBS), is an expert in speech and language disorders with more than 75 peer-reviewed publications and in excess of 120 invited and refereed presentations at national and international conferences.

“The citation by the Academy notes Tom Campbell’s contributions in all domains of professional service,” said Dr. Bert S. Moore, dean of the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences. “We are very pleased by this recognition of the qualities which we benefit from every day in his role at the Callier Center. Tom truly exemplifies the blend of high-level scholarship, clinical excellence and innovative leadership to which we aspire at Callier, and we are extremely pleased by this recognition by the Academy.”

“It was an honor to receive this award,” Campbell said. “Over the past 25 years, the members of ANCDS have played a pivotal role in advancing new approaches to the evaluation and treatment of individuals with neurologic communication deficits. It has truly been a pleasure to serve with such a dedicated group of professionals.”

Campbell has been a board certified member of ANCDS since 1990 and has previously served on the organization’s certification board and its Professional Affairs and Practice Guidelines Coordinating Committee.

In a recent ANCDS newsletter, outgoing Academy president Dr. Carl Coelho wrote, “Few members of ANCDS have contributed as much to the establishment and promotion of the organization as Tom (Campbell).”
