UTD Team, Players Take Top Honors In Texas Collegiate Chess Tournament

Heavily favored University of Texas at Dallas
(UTD) took top honors at the 7th Annual Texas Grade and Collegiate Chess Championship last weekend
in South Padre Island, scoring wins in both the team and individual competitions.

The UTD team, which included junior math major
Michal Kujovic, sophomore computer science major Anh Tuan Nguyen and freshman geography major
Sam Copeland, had a final score of 15 ½ points and beat lineups from The University of Texas
Pan American, which came in second with 11 ½ points, The University of Texas at Brownsville,
which finished third with nine points, and South Texas Community College, which was fourth with
five points.

Players from UTD also finished in first, second,
fourth, fifth and seventh place in the individual competition. They were Kujovic, Nguyen, freshman
business major Marc Fuhrmann, Copeland and graduate student Percy Galimbertti, respectively.

UTD chess players next will compete in the National
Collegiate Chess Championship, which will take place in Chicago Dec. 12-14.

In recent years, UTD has won several national championships
in intercollegiate chess. Its team is ranked in the top two in the United States.
