RICHARDSON, Texas (Oct. 22, 2003) – Dmitry Schneider, an 18-year-old freshman at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), won the “First Saturday” Grandmaster Tournament earlier this month in Budapest, Hungary.  Schneider lost only one game in the entire 11-day competition — to the second place finisher, International Master (IM) Peter Horvath of Hungary — and finished with a final score of 7 1/2 – 3 1/2. Although he won the event, which ended on Oct. 15, Schneider, who currently holds an IM ranking, narrowly missed earning his second grandmaster norm (to achieve that he would have had to win by at least a score of 8-3). Three norms are required to attain grandmaster ranking.
