The UTD Mercury won the Best In Show Award for four-year college weekly newspapers at the Spring 2001 Conference of the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association here last weekend.
The Mercury, which is edited by UTD junior Shelby Clark of Richardson, who is majoring in literary studies, won the top award in its category for its April 9, 2001 issue. The UTD student paper beat out entries from such other schools as Midwestern State University, Stephen F. Austin University, Tarleton State University and many others. The Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, with 75 member schools across the state, is the oldest and largest student journalism organization in the United States. Mercury Advertising Manager Tomas Lopez captured third-place honors at the conference in the live competition for print advertising design.
“The reporters and editors at The UTD Mercury work very hard to put out and interesting, readable product that adheres to high journalistic standards,” said Editorial Adviser Jay Miller. “I am very proud of them for producing the work that the press association deemed worthy of this award.”
