RICHARDSON, Texas (Oct. 1, 2004) — Starting this Sunday, children interested in learning how to play the game of chess or improving their existing skills will have an opportunity to do so from some of the top collegiate players in the country — members of The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) Chess Club.

On three Sundays this fall — Oct. 3 and 17 and Nov. 14 — youngsters aged 7 to 13 will be able to learn about various aspects of chess, including opening theory, tactics, end-game strategy and tournament preparation. Instruction also will be provided to novices with little or no prior chess experience who are interested in learning how to play. Among the instructors will be members of UTD’s chess team, perennially among the top-ranked college chess programs in the United States. There will be no more than six students per instructor.

The cost for the lessons is $50 per child per session or $75 for two children. The cost for all three sessions is $100 per child or $150 for two children. Proceeds from the lessons will go to the UTD Chess Club, to be spent on chess-related activities or equipment.

Each lesson will begin at 1 p.m. and conclude at 5 p.m. Participating students should go to Room 2.802 of the School of Management building on the UTD campus. Pre-registration is strongly recommended, although attendees will be able to enroll in person up to 30 minutes prior to each session. For registration forms, please visit the UTD chess website at http://www.utdallas.edu/orgs/chess/camp.htm.

Parking is conveniently located in the metered slots in front of the campus bookstore, just north of the School of Management. On Sundays, there is no charge for parking.
