The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), known for its high SAT scores, extensive research capabilities, demanding academic programs and national champion chess team, is beginning to make its mark on the fields of athletic competition as well.
For the first time in UTD’s 34-year history, one of its athletic teams is ranked in the top 10 nationally. This week, the university’s men’s golf team is ranked seventh in the United States in Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The rankings are available at www.golfstat.com.
It is the second historic breakthrough for UTD athletics in less than four months. In December, soccer star Trent Abbott, a senior majoring in business administration, became the first UTD athlete ever named first team All-America. The UTD men’s soccer team finished 16-4-1 overall and netted its first American Southwest Conference East Division title. The UTD women’s soccer team had its best season ever (16-4-2), won the ASC title and was ranked 22nd nationally by the NCAA in Division III.
The men’s golf team has five players and is coached by John Antonisse. Evan Nash, a senior majoring in interdisciplinary studies, serves as captain. The other members of the team are Dustin Wisener, a senior majoring in criminal justice; Clay Hauser, a senior majoring in finance; Scott Maurer, a sophomore majoring in finance, and Peyton Cook, a sophomore majoring in economics.
