U.T. Dallas To Host International Workshop On Challenges Facing Research Universities

RICHARDSON, Texas (Aug. 21, 2002) – Representatives from several Texas and international institutions of higher learning will speak at a workshop entitled “Issues Facing 21st Century Research Universities” on Sept. 20 at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). The workshop, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the McDermott Library Auditorium from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Speakers scheduled to participant include:

• 
  Dr. Perrie Adams, associate dean for research at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, who will speak on “IP Management Challenges in Health Care Research”
  
• 
  Dr. Jun Chen, vice president for research and international relations at Nanjing University in China, who will discuss the future of Chinese research universities
  
• 
  Dr. Tony Elam, associate dean of engineering at Rice University, who will present his thoughts on best practices for integrating engineering schools with schools for research
  
• 
  Dr. Richard Ewing, vice president for research at Texas A&M University, who will speak on technology transfer and the critical role it plays in ongoing research
  
• 
  Dr. Robert Gracy, associate vice president for research and biotechnology at the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center, who will discuss the special research challenges of medical research universities
  
• 
  Dr. Jim Johnson, interim pro-vice chancellor of Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, who will speak on issues associated with collaborating internationally for research
  
• 
  Dr. Keith McDowell, vice president for research and information technology at The University of Texas at Arlington, who will discuss changes in information technology and their impact on research
  
• 
  Dr. Juan Sanchez, vice president for research at The University of Texas at Austin, who will give an overview on “Challenges Facing 21st Century Research Universities”
  
• 
  Dr. John Warren, associate vice chancellor for intellectual property management at the University of Houston, who will discuss changes in intellectual property management

“Research university administrators are looking internally and externally for opportunities to collaborate and develop larger, more intensive projects,” said Dr. Da Hsuan Feng, vice president for research and graduate education at UTD. “This provides great opportunities for the researchers and a multitude of challenges for the administrators. This workshop will provide a sneak peek into those challenges, a chance to share best practices and an opportunity to build the relationships required to continue successful research growth.”

The workshop is being held in conjunction with a visit by a delegation from Nanjing University to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Special guests, who will serve as panel heads for the workshop, will be Dr. Peter Englert, chancellor of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and Dr. Yui Whei Chen-Yang, vice president and professor of the chemistry department at Chung Yuan Christian University in Taiwan.
