U. T. Dallas Career Center to Host Lecture By Official from U. S. State Department

RICHARDSON, Texas (July 9, 2004) — Vladimir Sambaiew, the U. S. State Department’s diplomat-in-residence at the University of Oklahoma, will discuss G8 Summits and their impact on the global economy on Tuesday, July 13, during a lecture hosted by the Career Center at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD).

Sambaiew will give his lecture, titled “Philosophy of the G8 Summits — Their Impact on the Global Economy,” at 6 p.m. in Room 1.117 in the School of Management Building on the UTD campus.

The lecture is free and open to the public, but seating is limited to the first 40 attendees.

Each year, leaders from the world’s eight major industrial democracies — Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States — get together for an event termed the Group of Eight, or G8, Summit. Historically, the summit has created global solutions to challenges ranging from terrorism to famine, health care to environmental protection.

Sambaiew, who most recently oversaw economic affairs for the U.S. Embassy in Paris, is one of 16 senior Foreign Service officers to serve as diplomats-in-residence at colleges and universities throughout the country. After his talk, he will provide information about internships, fellowships and careers with the Department of State, and he will conduct preparation sessions for students taking the Foreign Service written and oral exams.

In his 25-year diplomatic career, Sambaiew’s assignments have included senior positions in economic affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Canada and in environment, science and technology fields at the U. S. Embassy in Russia. In addition, he served in the U. S. Embassy in Tokyo and the U. S. Consulate in Osake-Kobe, Japan, where he focused on U.S.–Japan trade and economic issues, and in Washington, D.C., as the director of the State Department’s Office of Bilateral Trade Affairs. He also was the U. S. coordinator for Foreign Diplomat Training and has also worked extensively on African issues and in London during earlier assignments.
