Series to Explore Language, Hearing and More

The UT Dallas Callier Center for Communication Disorders kicks off the spring semester FLASH (Friday Language and Speech, Hearing) brown-bag series at noon on Jan. 15.

The series will include presentations about hearing, speech and language topics as they relate to both children and adults. Dr. Jennell Vick and Dr. Diane Ogiela, postdoctoral fellows in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, organized the spring semester series.

“The FLASH series is open to students, faculty and staff who are interested in communication and communication disorders,” said Vick. “The series also provides doctoral students with an informal setting in which to discuss their latest research projects.”

The presenters and topics for the spring semester FLASH series include:

“Parent Report Measures: When? Why? With How Much Confidence?” – Christine Dollaghan, PhD, professor in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences; Jan. 15.
“ERP Study Comparing Noun Phrase and Verb Phrase Processing” – Diane Ogiela, PhD post-doctoral fellow at the Callier Center; Jan. 29.
“Vertical Structuring of Semantic Relations Using Storybooks: A Single Subject Design” – Amy Louise Schwarz, doctoral student in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, and Anne van Kleek, PhD, professor in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences; Feb. 5.

“Use of Memory Aids across a Continuum of Speech-Language Pathology Services: Examining the Evidence and Practical Application” – Jana Mueller, doctoral student in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences; Feb. 26.
“Speech and Language Performance: A Pilot Study of 3-Year-Old Children Born Preterm” – Debra Weinberger, MD, medical director at the Callier Center and assistant professor of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at the UT Southwestern Medical Center; March 5.
“Natural Language Processing: Communication Disorders” – Melissa Sherman, doctoral student in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences; March 12.
“The Effect of Reduced Spectral Resolution on Vowel Discrimination in Infants”  – Andrea Warner-Czyz, PhD, research associate in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences; March 26.
“How Speakers with Aphasia Selectively Assign Prominence to Information in Narratives: Theoretical and Clinical Implications” – Gloria Olness, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of North Texas; April 16.
“Using Oral Kinematics to Identify Important Subgroups Among Individuals with Speech Disorders” – Jennell Vick, PhD, postdoctoral fellow at the Callier Center; April 23.
“A Developmental Approach to Social Cognitive Dysfunction” – Noah Sasson, PhD, assistant professor in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences; April 30.

The presentations will be held in room A-229 at the Callier Center’s Dallas location on Inwood Road from noon to 1 p.m. The presentations will also be video-linked to the Callier Center’s Richardson location on the UT Dallas campus.

A pizza lunch will be provided, and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available.
