U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison’s office says more federal funding is on the way to support UT Dallas research.
A bill that cleared the Senate Defense Appropriations Committee on Wednesday includes $2 million for the University, the senator’s office reported.
The bill also provides for the University to collaborate with UT Austin and UT Southwestern Medical Center in projects totaling $3 million, with the bulk of that money going to those UT System schools.
The Defense Appropriations bill still must be approved by Congress.
Projects that the bill would fund include:
• $2 million to develop a test bed for micro-sensors. There is an increasing demand for smaller, more complex sensors for military, national-security and border-security applications. The project will create the capability to test these systems thoroughly as they are developed at UT Dallas.
• $2 million, in conjunction with UT Austin, to develop the next generation of semiconductor technologies. Heightened competition from abroad is challenging the United States’ leadership in semiconductor technology. The funding will be used to develop semiconductors with new materials and processes and create a National Center on Multifunctional Materials at UT Austin.
• $1 million, to be used in collaboration with UT Southwestern Medical Center, to study the use of nanotechnology to treat medical problems including cancer, autoimmune deficiencies, HIV and organ-transplant rejection. Specifically, funding will be used to build and equip a state-of-the-art cell processing lab at UT Southwestern.
