New Info System to Simplify Fall Registration

By: Office of Media Relations | March 9, 2009

A new information management system will streamline the way UT Dallas students pre-register for fall classes.

Orion, the University’s PeopleSoft student information management system, is being installed and will be ready for use next month.

Some students will still be required to work with their advisers — particularly newly admitted students and those in specialized graduate programs. But the majority of currently enrolled students will be able to pre-register for fall classes in Orion and should find it a simple and easy process, according to Richard Huckaba, associate provost and project manager for Orion.

“Because Orion is a more modern system than its predecessor, the University registrar will be able to set enrollment appointments to ensure that students who are close to graduation can access tightly controlled classes before students with fewer hours,” Huckaba said.  “For example, seniors who have yet to complete their core curriculum classes will be able to register for those final requirements before the lower- division students register.”

Information about how to use Orion will be published on a new Web site, set to debut in the coming weeks, Huckaba said.  It will include directions for using and navigating Orion.

“Students will be able to log in and see their enrollment appointments on the Student Center page in Orion the first week of April,” Huckaba said.

About Project Orion

Orion is a Web-based information portal that will eventually manage virtually every aspect of a student’s academic career, from registering for classes to paying parking fines, to applying for graduation.  Orion operates on the PeopleSoft Campus Solutions platform, a comprehensive suite of software that gives users real-time information. For more information about Orion, please visit the project Web site.

Class Registration Process

Summer 2009 Semester

Students will continue to use the current system when they register for summer classes.

Fall 2009 Semester

Students pre-registering for fall 2009 will use the new Orion system under the following schedule:

Beginning April 6: Graduate students will be able to pre-register for fall classes.  The exact enrollment appointment for each student will be based on the number of hours the student has previously completed. Students who have completed more graduate hours will register before students who have completed fewer hours.

Beginning the week of April 13: Non-degree seeking graduate students, seniors and select other undergraduates whose participation in University programs requires their schedules mesh with specific calendars, will be allowed to register, again with enrollment appointments set in an order based on their current earned hours.

Beginning April 20: Juniors and sophomores will be able to pre-register.  Freshmen and non-degree seeking undergraduates will pre-register beginning April 27.
