The UTD Mercury took home a prestigious “Best of Show” trophy over the weekend at  the Associated Collegiate Press/College Media Advisers Convention in Kansas City, Mo.

The Mercury won for its Aug. 25, 2008, three-section, back-to-school edition, which was judged the best of all the four-year, non-weekly school papers.

In addition, Jacob Naasz, former graphics editor and graphics assistant, received an honorable mention for an in-house ad he created in a category that included papers of all sizes and publication schedules.

At the same convention last year, the student-run Mercury newspaper won a “Best of Show” award for a special edition.

“The Mercury staff is one of the most innovative, dedicated teams today, as evidenced by the paper’s exemplary work without a journalism program,” said Cristen Hixson, director of student media for UT Dallas.

“The students deserve nothing less than to be acknowledged for being the best by a national audience of their peers. I am so proud of them and can’t wait to see what they’ll produce next,” Hixson said.
