Men’s Baseball, Women’s Softball to Debut at UTD

RICHARDSON, Texas (Feb. 6, 2002) – Two new athletic teams, men’s baseball and women’s softball, will debut at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) next week — the first time in the university’s 33-year history that either sport has been played at UTD on an officially sanctioned intercollegiate level.

UTD will play its first regular season home baseball game at 1 p.m. on Wednesday Feb. 13, against Texas Wesleyan University on a new field on the UTD campus. The school’s first women’s softball game will be played on Saturday, Feb. 16, at noon against Texas Lutheran University, also on a new field on the UTD campus, followed by a second game at 2 p.m. The UTD baseball and softball teams will be competing in the American Southwest Conference. There will be no charge to attend next week’s games.

The addition of men’s baseball and women’s softball brings to 12 the sports in which UTD teams are now participating in addition to the more cerebral forms of competition, such as chess, debate and creative problem solving, for which the school is nationally known.

UTD does not field a football team and has no plans to do so.
