McDermott Library Extends Hours of Operation

RICHARDSON, Texas (Aug. 1, 2005) — In response to requests from students, the McDermott Library at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) has extended its normal operating hours from Sunday through Thursday nights to 2 a.m.

“We have always sought to be responsive in regard to the needs of our students,” said Dr. Larry D. Sall, dean of libraries at UTD. “After considering our own surveys and listening to the desires of many students, we have decided to offer this extended service, and we are going to do so within our current budget.”

At present, the latest the library is open until is midnight. The new hours become effective on Aug. 18, the first day of the full fall semester and will be effective through finals week. The circulation, information and media desks will be open during the extended hours. The hours for the fall semester are:

Sunday – 1 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Monday through Thursday – 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Friday – 8 a.m. to midnight

Saturday – 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“This is wonderful news,” said Dr. Darrelene Rachavong, UTD vice president for student affairs. “It is something the Student Government Association has wanted for awhile. We are grateful to Dr. Sall for working on this and making it happen.”

Since the McDermott Library is open to the public, the extended hours also will benefit patrons from the community, Sall said.
