Lecture to Chart Broadcast Tech's Next Waves

Current and future broadcasting technology standards will be the focus Friday of a Distinguished Lecturer Series presentation at the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science.

The guest speaker, Dr. Carl-Erik W. Sundberg, will start with the history of analog AM, FM and TV signals before venturing into the future of “Digital Audio and Video Broadcasting Methods,” as the lecture is titled. That presentation is at 11 a.m. Friday, March 21, in TI Auditorium (ECSS 2.102).

Sundberg will give a brief overview of the building blocks used in current and future digital audio and video broadcasting standards with emphasis on wireless transmission methods, media source coding, digital modulation and channel coding methods.

He will briefly recount the early history of broadcasting and analog TV, AM and FM signals. The emphasis is then on wireless digital broadcasting methods.

We will briefly cover schemes such as digital terrestrial television broadcasting (DVB-T, DVB-H, DMB, ISDB-T), digital audio broadcasting, Eureka 147,HD Radio, Hybrid IBOC AM and FM, DMB, DRM, MediaFLO ), and satellite broadcasting systems, (S-DMB,DVB-S, Sirius and XM).

The U.S. terrestrial digital audio broadcasting standard high-definition radio will be discussed in some detail, as well as future potential upgrades and modifications of this standard.

Carl-Erik W. Sundberg, president and chief scientist of SundComm was born in Karlskrona, Sweden, in 1943 and received M.S.E.E. and Dr. of Technology (PhD) degrees from the University of Lund, Sweden, in 1966 and 1975 respectively.
