Information Security Issues Phishing Alert

Spring Break ended on an irritable note Saturday when a rash of scam messages targeting UT Dallas e-mail users moved the Information Security team to issue a campus wide warning.

The e-mails purported to announce an upgrade in the University’s e-mail systems and asked recipients to reveal account information.  The e-mails were faked to appear as if they had been sent from “Utdallas Admin.”

Information Security warned students, faculty and staff members to avoid the phishing scam designed to retrieve users’ personal information.

The email bears the heading “Verify and Update Your University Of Texas Email Account,” followed by:

Dear Utdallas.edu Email users,

This message is from Utdallas.edu messaging center to all utdallas email account owners. We are currently upgrading our data base and e-mail center. We are deleting all unused utdallas email accounts to create more space for new email accounts.

The e-mails began appearing in UT Dallas inboxes on Saturday.

Information Security warns  e-mail users who had been asked to reveal their to immediately call (972) 883-6880 or send a message to infosecurity@utdallas.edu.

If You Have E-Mail Problems

The Information Security Office offered the following advice to possible questions about this attack:

  • What should I do if I’ve replied to the message? You should notify the Information Security Office and change your password immediately.

  • I changed my password after reading the e-mail. What should I do now? Nothing. If you changed your password but didn’t reply to the e-mail, your account is safe.

  • My account has been blocked. What should I do? Call the Information Security Office Monday–Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for help in resetting your account.
