‘Father of Bioinformatics’ to Lecture Nov. 2 at UTD

RICHARDSON , Texas ( Nov. 1, 2005) – Dr. Hwa Lim will give a lecture on the future of bioinformatics – a word he coined – at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) on Wednesday, Nov. 2.
The presentation, which will begin at 4 p.m. in the Texas Instruments Auditorium (ECSS 2.102), is free and open to the public. The talk will be preceded by a reception beginning at 3:30 p.m. in the same location.
Bioinformatics is a rapidly developing branch of biology and is highly interdisciplinary, using techniques and concepts from informatics, statistics, mathematics, chemistry, biochemistry, physics and linguistics. The word describes the use of computers to manipulate biological information. In genome projects, for example, this includes the development of methods to search databases quickly, to analyze DNA sequence information and to predict protein sequence and structure from DNA sequence data. Bioinformatics is expected to impact the health sciences, medicine and biotech industrial applications.
Lim is a renowned expert and pioneer in the fields of bioinformatics and computational biology. Currently, he is president and CEO of D’Trends, Inc., a San Ramon, California, biotech consultancy. Lim is an author and editor of numerous publications, reviews and books in the field of bioinformatics, and has organized several key meetings in bioinformatics and computational biology.
Lim’s appearance at UTD is sponsored by three university entities — the Department of Mathematical Sciences, the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development and the campus chapter of Sigma Xi.
