Candlelight Vigil to Honor Bhopal Victims

The Association for India’s Development, a UT Dallas student group, will hold a candlelight vigil and stage a play Sunday to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the gas disaster in Bhopal, India.
The event at 6 p.m. at the Student Union is designed to highlight health threats in Bhopal, where chemical contaminants from the methyl isocyanate gas release have been blamed for continuing problems such as breathing difficulties, cancer and birth defects.
The disaster occurred Dec. 3, 1984, when a a holding tank at a plant run by a subsidiary of Union Carbide overeheated and released clouds of the poisonous gas. Up to 22,000 people died immediately or from complications afterward.
Association for India’s Development volunteers will stage a play about the events that led to the disaster, the disaster itself and the aftermath. They will hold a candlelight vigil against a slideshow backdrop that will portray the condition of the second-generation survivors in Bhopal.
