Campus Observes Peace Officers Memorial Day

UT Dallas police officers will honor their fallen comrades across the nation Thursday with several observances to mark National Peace Officers Memorial Day.

President David E. Daniel issued a proclamation to mark the day, and the University’s flag will fly at half-staff.

Officers are placing blue ribbons on police vehicles and wearing black mourning bands on their badges to commemorate those who have fallen.

A proclamation by President David E. Daniel reads in part, “Let us recognize and pay respect to the survivors of our fallen heroes.”

The proclamation sets aside the day “in honor of those law enforcement officers who, through their courageous deeds, have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community or have become disabled in the performance of duty.”

Peace Officers Memorial Day is part of National Police Week, a time to “reflect upon the sacrifices our fellow citizens make to serve their communities and recognize the service of those who hold the public trust,” Lt. Steve Finney said.
