The Comets (30-15), champions of the American Southwest Conference, will open their second-ever trip to the NCAA Division III tournament at 4:30 p.m. Central on Thursday against University of Redlands (33-11) in Spokane, Washington.
The American Southwest Conference champion UT Dallas baseball team will open play in the regional round of the 2018 NCAA Division III National Baseball Championship on Thursday.
The Comets (30-15) claimed their first-ever conference title by defeating Concordia Texas (29-16) in a best-of-three series last weekend to secure the program’s second berth in the national tournament. The Comets will play in a six-team regional tournament hosted by Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington.
In the first game of the ASC championship series last Thursday, the Comets won, 9-3, led by pitcher Jamie Andriot’s complete game. In the second game, pitcher Ruben Renteria struck out eight batters and gave up just one earned run over seven innings in the decisive 12-3 win.
Andriot was named the MVP of the tournament’s Gold Bracket and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Renteria, Barry Casey, Thomas Craig and Connor Scruggs.
