Architecture Lectures to Complement Exhibit

“Life Bean” by Anderson and Anderson

A series of lectures, all touching on architectural themes, is scheduled for next month at the Centraltrak artists’ residency.

Two of the programs will feature comments from artists associated with works in the UT Dallas facility’s inaugural exhibit, “False Space and Time of the Apartment.”

Attendees will hear about architecture’s relationship to furniture, prefabrication and the destructive capacity of war.

First up is Andrew Herscher’s talk May 1 on “Warchitecture,” a term that refers to the unbuilding of cities by conflict and war. Herscher, an assistant professor of architecture at the University of Michigan, has studied the effects of political violence on architecture, cultural memory, collective identity and social justice.

His work has focused on modern and contemporary Central and Eastern Europe, particularly the Balkans conflict. He has worked for the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia as an investigator and expert witness on the war-time destruction of cultural heritage.

On May 8 the gallery will host Nathalie Wolberg, whose “Habiter dessus dessous” is featured in a video at the “False Space” exhibit.  The architect’s work makes novel uses of interior space, often blurring distinctions between furniture, walls and floors.

The lecture on May 22 features Peter Anderson, whose San Francisco architectural firm specializes in prefabrication systems that creatively explore new construction technologies and affordable building methods. His firm, which he runs with his brother, has also branched out into furniture and product design.

Currently on display at Centraltrak are “Lifebean” and “White Hot Orange,” designed by a team of students from an architectural studio the Andersons taught at the University of California, Berkeley.

The lectures will all be at 7 p.m. at Centraltrak’s newly opened facility at 800 Exposition Ave., in the Deep Ellum area of Dallas.
