The UT Dallas School of Management has ranked the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania as the No. 1 business school worldwide in its annual study of research productivity.

Top-Ranked Schools
1. University of Pennsylvania
2. Duke University
3. New York University
4. University of Chicago
5. University of Michigan

The annual study, released by the School of Management on Thursday, ranked the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University No. 2, ahead of the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University, which occupied that position last year.

The Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago jumped two places to take fourth place. The Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor rounded out the top five, moving from last year’s No. 8 spot.

These rankings identify the top 100 business schools in North America and worldwide on the basis of faculty research productivity in leading academic journals over a five-year period. The school has tracked the publications of business school faculty members since 1990 in 24 leading peer-reviewed academic journals. The current rankings are based on the number of articles published in those journals from 2004 to 2008

The UT Dallas School of Management made significant strides in 2008’s rankings, climbing three places to No. 17 on the U.S. list and No. 18 on the worldwide listing.

“We are pleased to see that our faculty’s research productivity places us among the top 20 business schools in the world,” said Dr. Hasan Pirkul, dean of the School of Management. “Our goal is to be a nationwide leader in management research and education to provide students the most advanced educational experience available. This showing demonstrates that we’re reaching that goal.”

The rankings offer business school faculties and administrators benchmarks to compare their research productivity against that of their peers, according to Pirkul.
