The School of Arts and Humanities will welcome novelist and poet Rolando Hinojosa to campus in an event celebrating the University’s new Master of Arts degree in Latin American Studies.
“A Reading and a Conversation with Rolando Hinojosa-Smith” is scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, in Jonsson Performance Hall. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will precede the event.
Hinojosa is a scholar of Latin American literature at The University of Texas at Austin.
He is the first Chicano author to receive a major international literary award, the prestigious Premio Casa de las Américas, for Klail City y sus alrededores, part of a series of novels known to English-speaking readers as The Klail City Death Trip.
Hinojosa’s fiction, often infused with satire or subtle humor, has been praised for its multiple narratives that unite many characters’ perspectives into a unique, combined voice of the Chicano people.
Hinojosa has also produced essays, poetry, and a detective novel titled Partners in Crime.
The graduate program in Latin American Studies is making its debut this semester. The degree is designed to provide a solid scholarly foundation for students who wish to continue an academic career beyond the master’s degree, as well as for students who are interested in pursuing a professional career requiring familiarity with Latin America.
