RICHARDSON, Texas (Dec. 15, 2004) — Jazz trumpeter Marvin Stamm and pianist Bill Mays will perform in concert in the Conference Center at The University of Texas at Dallas at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 21. They will be joined by Ed Soph on drums and John Adams on bass.

Stamm and Mays have been praised by many jazz publications including Downbeat magazine, which raved that “Stamm has a gorgeous tone on the trumpet and flugelhorn,” and Jazz Times, which called Mays “one of the masters of color and touch among today’s pianists.” Stamm and Mays regularly appear in concert as a duo. The two released an album, By Ourselves, in November 2000. Mays has played on a variety of movie scores, including Gremlins, Rocky, Fargo, Interview with a Vampire, Gods and Monsters and The Lady Killers, and has received performance grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Meet the Composer, PennPAT, and the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation.

Soph, associate professor of jazz studies at the University of North Texas (UNT), is an acclaimed musician, author and teacher. He wrote The Big Band Primer, Essential Techniques for Drumset, and Musical Time. Soph has presented master classes throughout Europe, New Zealand, the Mideast, the Far East and Australia. He is the drummer for the Marvin Stamm Quartet, which produced the Stamm/Soph Project in November 2000.

Adams has played bass with the Dallas Symphony Pops, the Dallas Summer Musicals, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and the Fort Worth Ballet. He was a professor at UNT for 10 years. Adams currently performs at a variety of special events throughout Dallas with his trio or sextet. The John Adams Group recently released a live album. Adams’ debut album, Jump Shot , released in 1996, features Stamm, Mays and Soph.
