A spirited guitar competition, eclectic jazz performances and mythology-inspired classical music are some of the arts events sure to keep UT Dallas a lively and creative hub this spring.
On Feb. 19, violinist Chloé Trevor and pianist Jeff Lankov will bring to life a new composition from music professor and composer Dr. Robert Xavier Rodríguez. The program will juxtapose Rodríguez’s work with music by American composer John Adams and an earlier masterpiece by the 20th-century composer Igor Stravinsky.
Inspired by ancient Mayan mythology, Xochiquetzal is a 22-minute work containing rich, folk melodies and named after the Mayan goddess associated with love, beauty and femininity.
“To evoke the ancient Mayan world, I present simple pentatonic themes in the spirit of what Manuel de Falla called ‘imaginary folk music,"’ said Rodríguez, Chair in Art and Aesthetic Studies. “These folk materials interact, and sometimes clash, with contemporary sounds to create a synthesis of time periods and cultures.”
The Romero Guitar Quartet
In March, UT Dallas’ guitar program will host its annual Texas Guitar Competition and Festival, a three-day event that awards about $8,000 in cash prizes and showcases exceptional classical guitar students.
“The spring celebration of music brings to campus internationally renowned jazz and classical performers — ranging from jazz organist Joey DeFrancesco and his trio to rising star classical violinist Chloé Trevor,” said Dr. Dennis M. Kratz, dean of the School of Arts and Humanities and the Ignacy and Celina Rockover Professor of Humanities. “One of the highlights of the spring will be the appearance by the Romeros, acknowledged as the world’s pre-eminent classical guitar quartet, as part of our 15th annual Texas Guitar Competition and Festival. I encourage everyone to take advantage of the opportunity to hear these and other superb artists in person.”
Then, vocal performances will take center stage in April with concerts from UTD’s Chamber Singers and the Community Chorale.
