Arts, Women’s Groups to Present ‘Monologues’

The University of Texas at Dallas Rat PAC and the Galerstein Women’s Center will present Eve Ensler’s Obie Award winning The Vagina Monologues at the University Theatre at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, and Saturday, Feb. 16.

Tickets are $10.  The Feb. 16 performance will be sign-interpreted.

A review in the Chicago Tribune states, “Ultimately Ensler achieves something extraordinary.” The New York Times called The Vagina Monologues “probably the most important piece of political theater of the last decade.”

The performances are produced in cooperation with the V-Day organization as a fund-raiser for Victims Outreach, which helps provide shelter for battered and abused women.  This is the Rat PACs’ fifth year to produce The Vagina Monologues.  Previous Rat PAC productions have raised over $5,000.

V-Day began in 1998 with a performance at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom.  The 2,500-seat venue sold out, and the production raised $250,000 for local anti-violence groups. Since then, the V-Day organization has raised more than $50 million, produced international educational, media and public service announcement campaigns and funded more than 5,000 community-based anti-violence programs and safe houses in South Dakota, Egypt, Kenya and Iraq.  V-Day’s mission is “to end rape, incest, battery, female genital mutilation and sexual slavery.”

The Rat PAC (Performing Arts Collective) is a student organization on the campus of UT Dallas dedicated to promoting the performing arts and offering opportunities for students to perform in various productions.  Past productions include The Pillow Man, Alice in Wonderland, a one-act play festival and a Guitar Hero 2 tournament.

Members work in all areas of production from acting to lighting and crew work.  The Rat PAC is also a community service club, raising money to go to local charities such as Victims Outreach.
