RICHARDSON, Texas (March 14, 2006) — In celebration of 10 years of scholarly exchange between The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) and Mexico’s University of Guanajuato, UTD’s School of Art and Humanities will sponsor a concert featuring classical pianist Ana Cervantes and the eclectic medieval group Los Tiempos Pasados at 8 p.m. on March 25 in the university’s Conference Center Auditorium.

Cervantes has been hailed as a “physical, emotional pianist…with an extraordinary touch” by the Newark-Star Ledger.  In 1999, she received the Fulbright-García Robles award to develop repertoire of Mexican contemporary music for performance in the United States.  For the UTD concert, Cervantes will perform a variety of works by Mexican composers, including Federico Ibarra, Ramón Montes de Oca, Marcela Rodríguez and Manuel Ponce.

Los Tiempos Pasados, whose name translates to “Ages Past,” has been recreating early music for modern audiences since 1972.  The ensemble, led by Armando López Valdivia, serves as a cultural ambassador of the University of Guanajuato through its early music workshop, which is run by its School of Music and its cultural extension program.  The group’s unique sound derives from its varied assortment of both early and modern instruments, including flutes, mandolins, guitars, tambourines, lutes, dulcimers, fidulas and drums.

Partial fee support for the event is provided by UTD’s Carl J. Thomsen Fund for Student Enrichment.
