Mexican classical guitarist Raul Olmos, who has performed throughout the Americas and Europe, plays Friday, Feb. 1, at 8 p.m. at the UT Dallas Jonsson Performance Hall.

Olmos studied at la Escuela Popular de Bellas Artes, el Conservatorio de las Rosas de Morelia and el Conservatorio Nacional de Musica in Mexico City. He has attended master classes in Spain, France and Cuba with instructors like David Russell, Jose Luis Rodrigo, Leo Brouwer and Jorge Cardoso. He has given recitals at important functions for the State of Michoacan and the Mexican Republic.

Olmos has played in the United States, Canada, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Turkey, Cuba, Cyprus, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

He has received numerous prizes and recognitions, including grants from the Government of the State of Michoacan and the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. In 1999, Olmos was recognized by the Hungarian Embassy in Mexico for his help in promoting the cultural interchange between the two countries.

He founded the International Festival of Guitar of Morelia, which has just finished its 18th year and for which he serves as general coordinator. Olmos is the concert artist of the State Secretary of Education and was the Cultural Adviser of Morelia’s City Council.

His program will include Tarantella and Gondolier by Johann Kaspar Mertz, Saturnia and Mediterraneo by Jurgen Schwalk, Suite Aires de Son and Dos Piezas by Gerardo Tamez, Homenaje a la Guitarra by Owe Walter and Zapateado by Ramon Noble

Tickets for the show are $20 for general admission and free at the door to UT Dallas students with valid Comet Cards.
