The American Medical Association has included an article published last year by a recent UT Dallas doctoral graduate and an economics professor in a policy research update to state medical associations.
The article, published in Health Economics, draws on research conducted at UT Dallas by Brandon Roberts under the supervision of his dissertation committee. Professor Emeritus Irving Hoch was co-author.
Roberts’ research studied the effect of medical malpractice litigation on medical costs and physician supply. The article, titled “Malpractice Litigation and Medical Costs in Mississippi,” examines the impact of the litigation environment on medical costs at the county level in that state.
Roberts received his Ph.D. in 2005 in the political economy program at UT Dallas in 2005. He is president of the consulting firm Premier Insights Inc. in Canton, Miss.
The paper was cited in the AMA’s Policy Research Perspectives as one of three papers that were significant contributions in the area of defensive medicine by the Economics and Health Policy Research arm of the AMA.
