RICHARDSON, Texas (Oct. 12, 2004) — Kremerata Baltica, the chamber orchestra created by illustrious violinist Gidon Kremer in 1997, will perform at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 8 p.m., in the Conference Center on campus. The concert, co-sponsored by UTD and the New Conservatory of Dallas, will be the Dallas debut of the chamber orchestra and part of its U. S. tour en route to Carnegie Hall.
Kremer will perform as lead violinist with the orchestra for the evening’s concert, which will feature a variety of pieces from contemporary composers. The Kremerata Baltica will play Fratres by Estonian Arvo Paert, Musica Dolorosa by Latvian Peter Vasks and Song of the Organ-grinder by Russian Leonid Desyatnikov. The orchestra will perform a few “traditional” classics that have been rearranged. These works include Valse-Caprice by Schubert-Liszt, arranged by D. Oistrach-G. Pelecis, and G Major Quartet by Schubert, arranged by Kissine.
Gidon Kremer
In 2002, the Kremerata Baltica won a Grammy for After Mozart. The group’s most recent album, Russian Seasons, was nominated for a Grammy in 2003. The orchestra consists of 28 musicians, whose average age is 27, from the Baltic States of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. It is considered one of the most prominent international ensembles.
Kremer created the Kremerata Baltica as a 50th “birthday present to myself” after establishing himself as a premier musician. Kremer has worked with many world-class conductors, including Christoph Eschenbach, Leonard Bernstein, Claudio Abbado, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Herbert von Karajan, Lorin Maazel, Valery Gergiev, Riccardo Muti, James Levine, Zubin Mehta and Sir Neville Marriner.
