3rd Annual Classical Guitar Competition
The competition will be sponsored in part by the Carl J. Thomsen Fund for Student Enrichment and Savarez Strings of France. Monetary prizes, donated by Renaissance Capital Group, will be awarded for first, second and third place, and all winners will be invited to perform in the UTD 2004/2005 Guitar Series. Applications from advanced guitar students wishing to compete will be accepted until March 1. Guidelines can be found at http://ah.utdallas.edu/news_events/annual_guitar_competition.html. All of the activities will be held in the Jonsson Performance Hall (JO 2.604) on campus. The guitar festival will begin on Thursday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m., with a master class presented by this year’s honoree, composer Duarte. Admission to observe the master class is free, and tickets will not be necessary. Seating is limited, however, and it is suggested that observers arrive early to claim a seat. The second day of the festival, Friday, March 19, will feature a free concert at 8 p.m. by the prizewinners of last year’s guitar competition — Milen Parashkevov (first place), David Buck (second) and Rade Amanovic (third). The competition finals will be open to the public at no charge and will take place on Saturday, March 20, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The competition winners will be announced during a concert of Duarte’s music — performed by Madriguera and Valdislav Blaha, guitarists, and Kathryn Evans, soprano, at 8 that night. The composer also will give a lecture. Tickets for the Saturday, March 20, Duarte lecture and concert are $10 for adults, $5 for students and free at the door to UTD students, faculty members and staff with a valid identification. UTD ticket office hours are from 2 to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and at the door one hour prior to show time. Duarte has composed more than 130 works for the guitar and lute. Most of Duarte’s compositions have been have been published and 57 have been commercially recorded by artists and ensembles in 24 countries. His 60 th and 70 th birthdays were celebrated with concerts of his music in the Wigmore Hall in London, played by artists from Britain, the United States, Czechoslovakia, Venezuela, Germany and Croatia. His 80th birthday was marked by a similar concert in Bolivar Hall with artists from England, Scotland, Brazil, Greece and Italy. In 1990, he received a Silver Medal from the Czech Ambassador in London for his “services to Anglo-Czech and Slovak cultural relations,” and in 1999 he received the Guitar Foundation of America’s Award for Lifetime Achievement. RICHARDSON, Texas (Feb. 12, 2004) — The Annual Texas Classical Guitar Competition and Festival will return to The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) March 18 to 20. This unique, Texas competition, which is now in its third year, is designed to showcase outstanding classical guitar students at least 16 years of age and this year will celebrate the work of guitar composer John Duarte.
