UT Dallas to Mark International Education Week With Series of Lectures, Information Sessions

RICHARDSON, Texas (Nov. 7, 2006) – International education will be the focus of a weeklong series of events to be conducted Nov. 13-17 on the campus of The University of Texas at Dallas.  Among the week’s highlights will be a talk about current U.S.-Mexico relations by the new Consul General of Mexico in Dallas, H. Enrique Hubbard Urrea.

The events will help UT Dallas mark International Education Week, a joint effort of the United States Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote awareness of global educational opportunities and benefits.  The university’s Office of International Education and Office of International Student Services are co-sponsors of the campus activities.

“The objective of this weeklong celebration is to convey information about international educational endeavors and opportunities at UT Dallas, including study abroad and exchange programs, global research and the international student community on campus,” said Dr. Rodolfo Hernandez Guerrero, head of the university’s Office of International Education and director of the Center for U.S.-Mexico Studies.

While the programs are aimed primarily at the campus community, interested members of the public are also welcome to attend any of the events, said Cristen Casey, director of the Office of International Student Services.

The lineup for the week follows:

• Monday, Nov. 13 – International Education Week luncheon, noon to 1 p.m. in the Galaxy Room in the Student Union.  Presentations will be made about UT Dallas’ Office of International Education and the Office of International Student Services.
• Tuesday, Nov. 14 – The third lecture in the 2006-07 UT Dallas U.S.-Mexico Lecture Series, featuring Dr. Jose Carlos Gomez Larranaga, general director of the Mexican Research Center for Mathematics, 11 a.m. in the Engineering and Computer Science Building, Room 4.910.  He will present a talk about the “Millennium Prize Problem,” a mathematical problem that has resisted solution over the years.  In addition, information about the National Security Education Program’s Boren Scholarships and Fellowships, which provide U.S. students opportunities to study abroad, will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at a table in the Comet Café in the Student Union.
• Wednesday, Nov. 15 – A representative of Edge Hill College in England will be available to discuss study abroad opportunities from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Comet Café.  From 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the same location, materials on international scholarship and fellowship programs will be available at an information table.
• Thursday, Nov. 16 – International Research Lunch honoring UT Dallas faculty members involved in collaborative research with colleagues in other countries, noon to 1 p.m. in the Galaxy Room in the Student Union.  At 7:30 p.m., Residential Life International Potluck Dinner honoring international students on campus and UT Dallas students participating in academic programs abroad, Phase Eight Clubhouse in the Waterview Park Apartments.
• Friday, Nov. 17 – Talk on contemporary relationship between U.S. and Mexico from a diplomatic perspective by Consul General of Mexico in Dallas, Ambassador H. Enrique Hubbard Urrea, 11 a.m. to noon, McDermott Suite in the Eugene McDermott Library.
