Russian Pianist Alexander Moutouzkine to Play

Russian pianist Alexander Moutouzkine will perform at the UT Dallas Conference Center at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, in a concert that will benefit the Bryce and Jonelle Jordan Scholarship Fund.

The evening’s program will include Johann Sebastian Bach’s Toccata in C Minor (BWV 911), Franz Liszt’s transcriptions of Frédéric Chopin’s My Joys and The Maiden’s Wish, Liszt’s Reminiscences de Norma (from Vincenzo Bellini’s opera “Norma”), Gabriel Fauré’s Barcarolle No.3 in E-flat Major, Op.42 and Sergei Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 7 in B-flat Major, Op. 83.

Moutouzkine has won top prizes at numerous international competitions including the 10th Citta di Sulmona (Italy), the Calabria International (Italy), the Maria Canals (Spain), the Pilar Bayona (Spain), the Guerrero Foundation (Spain), the Ignacio Cervantes (Cuba), the 2nd Shanghai International (China), the Mieczyslav Munz (U.S.), the 26th Frinna Awerbuch (U.S.), the Panama International Piano Competition, the New Orleans International Piano Competition, the XI International Piano Competition of Escaldes-Engordany (Andorra) and the Tivoli Competition (Denmark).

He earned a Special Award for artistic potential in 2001 at the 11th Van Cliburn International Competition when he was 19.  A critic for The Dallas Morning News proclaimed of his performance, “Moutouzkine played Brahms’ Op. 117 Intermezzi more beautifully, more movingly, than I’ve ever heard them.  At once sad, tender and noble, this was playing of heart-stopping intimacy and elegance.”

Moutouzkine has performed recitals throughout France, Spain, Germany, England, Italy, China, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Morocco, Belgium and North and South America.  His solo performance at the Fundacion Canal in Madrid was broadcast live on National Spanish Television.  Moutouzkine has appeared as soloist with Chamber Music International, the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra of the Czech Republic, the Moscow Conservatory Symphonic Orchestra, the Kiev National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Valencia Philharmonic, the National Symphonic Orchestra of Cuba, the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth, the Richardson Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphonic Orchestra of Panama, the Radio Television Orchestra of Spain and the Gran Canary Symphony and Tenerife Symphony in the Canary Islands.

Bryce and Jonelle Jordan Scholarship Fund
The Bryce and Jonelle Jordan Scholarship Fund was established in 1981 to support undergraduate music students at UT Dallas.  Bryce Jordan, flutist and musicologist, was the first president of UT Dallas.  The scholarship has since been extended, with Dr. Jordan’s approval, to provide financial support for undergraduate students in any of the creative and performing arts, which include music, theatre, dance, creative writing and the visual arts.

Scholarships are awarded in two different ways: the Bryce and Jonelle Jordan Scholarships for Creative and Performing Arts and the Bryce and Jonelle Jordan Awards.  The School of Arts and Humanities awards the Bryce and Jonelle Jordan Scholarships for Creative and Performing Arts, from $500 to $1,000 per long semester, to students who are or will be full-time students.  Student must apply for these scholarships.

The School of Arts and Humanities presents the Bryce and Jonelle Jordan Awards annually at the Spring Arts Festival to undergraduate students in recognition of extraordinary contributions to the arts during the preceding academic year.  Students must be nominated by a member of the Art and Performance faculty, be planning to enroll for the following Fall Semester and be full-time students in good academic standing.
