Biology Prof to Defend Darwin's Theory

By: Office of Media Relations | April 23, 2008

UT Dallas biology professor Stephen D. Levene has been asked to serve on a panel debating the film Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed.

Dr. Levene will speak against the movie’s premise, which accuses academia of unfair bias against educators who espouse the theory of intelligent design.

The Dallas Philosopher’s Forum is hosting the discussion at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at the Angelika Mockingbird Theater. It will include an open question-and-answer session. The event is free for forum members and $5 for non-members.

The documentary film is in current release and features writer, actor and comedian Ben Stein. The film will not be shown at the event, so attendees are urged to see it in advance.

Dr. Levene is a professor of molecular and cell biology at the University of Texas at Dallas. His research interests involve protein-DNA interactions in site-specific recombination and the structure and dynamics of nucleic acids in solution.

The Dallas Philosopher’s Forum has invited Frank Sherwin, science editor at the Institute for Creation Research, to speak in favor of the film’s intelligent-design premise.

Rick Worland, chairman of the Cinema-Television Division of the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University also has been invited as a film expert.

The theater is at 5321 East Mockingbird Lane in Dallas, near the Northeast corner of Mockingbird and Central Expressway.
